Unpopular opinion: hiring revenue talent from CVs is one of the most expensive mistakes a company can make. You're essentially paying £5–15k to guess. No CV tells you if someone can actually run a discovery call, handle objections, or build a pipeline from zero. But we keep hiring like it does. I work with recruitment agencies and I'm trying to understand this problem from the people who've actually lived it. If you've ever hired a salesperson or BDR who looked great on paper and flopped in reality, what went wrong? And what would have actually told you they weren't the right fit? Drop it below. Every reply helps.
Lilian U. The list of why hired people don't "work out" is miles long. On paper, as we know, is BS. People can fluff their way in interviews, especially when interviewing people who are not good at interviewing prospects. Interviewer bias is HUGE. Looks are deceiving, but they get hired over capability. Ideally sales people should not be interviewing sales people. have your tech people interview them. They smell BS miles away. Vice versa, have sales interview tech people, in addition to their tech interview. This helps understand their team/personality dynamic.
Thanks so much… I appreciate this
the part a CV cant show is how someone reacts when a call goes off-script. the BDRs who flopped for us all looked great on paper, then folded the moment a prospect pushed back. cheapest signal weve found is a 20 min live task that mirrors the actual job, hand them a messy discovery scenario and watch how they think, not how they pitch. you learn more in those 20 mins than from any list of past logos.
