The em dash has always been a personal preference for me — almost like a hobby punctuation. You can absolutely skip it and your writing will still be sharp. I think I picked it up around four years ago, and it’s been my favorite ever since. It helps me keep the flow without being too strict about punctuation or sentence breaks. It also lets the writing breathe more — it’s easier to guide how the reader experiences each line, giving them little pauses where needed. Plus, it saves editing time and have so much character.
Of course, some people see em dashes as a tell of AI writing — but honestly, I think AI will eventually tone that down or maybe even start overusing semicolons instead. Either way, I’m not giving up on em dashes just because AI adopted it. What do you think?
