Most people think crushing quota means you should be a VP Sales tomorrow. Those same people don’t know the difference between coaching and managing. There is no doubt in my mind that strong leadership is the biggest gap in sales today. Quick story... I used to work at a company where the only thing we talked about was revenue. Dollars mattered and people did not. The leader would do whatever it took to her people to drive revenue and satisfy a client. Part of me admires that attitude but in her wake of crushing quota I saw great people who quit, mental health issues, stress, and requests to transfer off her team. Here is the kicker - “Corporate” didn’t care - all they saw was good sales numbers and the rest was secondary. I believe deeply you can be a great leader who crushes quotas AND a great leader at the same time. I would argue this particular leader who have done 2x if she had a different approach to leadership. That was years ago..... Some companies do a good job on developing people and building leaders. Most don’t. My experience says that most SaaS / AI companies barely pay attention to this. They talk a lot about... quota targets revenue models connect rates quality vs quantity outbound inbound blah blah blah blah And very little about what proper sales leadership looks like.
